Jennifer Estep | May 2007 | Paranormal Romance | First Book in the BigTime series
I picked up Karma girl after reading the bleak and serious The Handmaid’s Tale. I needed something fun and upbeat.
The Karma Girl by Jennifer Estep turned out to be just what I was looking for. Carmen, a journalist finds her fiance and her best friend in a very compromising position 30 minutes before her own wedding. Other than that she also finds out that her fiance is a superhero and her best friend is an Ubervillian. Needless to say she is heartbroken, but more than that she feels betrayed that she didn’t know the truth about them. Being a journalist she does the first thing that comes to her mind. She takes a picture of them which is splashed on the front page of the newspaper the next day also revealing their identities. Well, the identities of superheroes and Ubervillians is supposed to be kept secret right?
This incident triggers a need to reveal the identities of as many superheros as she can so that no one feels cheated the way she did. After a string of jobs and revealing a few identities, she moves to New York when she is hired to find the identities of the members of a superhero group called Fearless Five.
When the identity of one of the guys from Fearless Five is splashed in the newspaers because of Carmen’s investigation, her entire focus changes. She is now caught in a battle between Fearless five and the Ubervillians group called The Terrible Triad
Enough of the plot I guess. I had to tell you at least this much to show you how cool the plot is. But these are not spoilers I promise. I had such a great time with this book. I just couldn’t put it down. I was totally caught up with Carmen and her life. Not to mention the concept of Superheroes and Ubervillians was cool too.
I think Carmen is going on my top 10 woman in Romance Fiction list. She was funny, smart, straight forward and not afraid of getting what she wanted. She was strong and she admitted her mistakes and tried to correct them. Did I mention she was funny?
This book was a perfect mix of Paranormal and Romance. Talking of Romance, it looks like I forgot to mention the hero. He was considerate, emotional and sexy, in fact hot. I won’t tell you more about him for the fear of spoiling the book. But trust me, you’ll like him.
While I expected to like Karma Girl, I didn’t expect to like it so much. That’s probably the reason for so much gushing. Anyway read it if you like romance or Paranormal romance or just want to get lost in a book for some time.
This is the first book in the series and I’m definitely going to find the next 2 books in the series. I’m tempted but I would probably wait to read another of Jennifer Estep’s books before adding her to my favorite Romance authors list.
4.25 out of 5 stars

I think your reading strategy is good, Violet. I do that, too, after reading something serious.

I really expected it to be total crap, and was surprised when it wasn’t. There are a couple plot points which really bothered me, most especially the first rescue.
