BTT: Fantasy and Sci-Fi…

One of my favorite sci-fi authors (Sharon Lee) has declared June 23rd Fantasy and Science Fiction Writers Day.

As she puts it:

So! In my Official Capacity as a writer of science fiction and fantasy, I hereby proclaim June 23 Science Fiction and Fantasy Writers Day! A day of celebration and wonder! A day for all of us readers of science fiction and fantasy to reach out and say thank you to our favorite writers. A day, perhaps, to blog about our favorite sf/f writers. A day to reflect upon how written science fiction and fantasy has changed your life.

So … what might you do on the 23rd to celebrate? Do you even read fantasy/sci-fi? Why? Why not?

I don’t read much Sci-fi. It’s not that I don’t like it; it’s just that I don’t know what to read. The books I remember reading are The hollow Skull (loved it) and The Trechyon Web by Christopher Pike. And I’ve read Uglies too. I used to read a lot of Robin Cook in college. Does that come under Sci-fi? And Congo too. Its one of my favorite book and I love the movie too. This is as far as my Sci-fi reading goes. I might have read others but I can’t recall any at the moment.

I read Fantasy but not as much as I would like to. As always I can’t recall any names. And I’ve never heard of Sharon Lee. I have Un Lun Dun which is an Urban Fantasy and I’ve been wanting to read it for a long time. Lately I’ve noticed there are a lot of Fantasy books coming out in YA.

What will I do on 23rd? I don’t know. I might read or review a fantasy/ Sci-fi. What say?

Do you read Fantasy/ Sci-Fi? What will you do on 23rd?

tempt_me_at_twilightOMG, I had to mention this. I just found out that the third book in the Hathway series Tempt me at Twilight is releasing in September this year. Yipieeeeeeeeee!!!!!!!

I’m at work and I literally feel like jumping but I can’t, so I’m doing the next best thing. Writing it on my blog 🙂
I’ve read the first 2 books Mine till Midnight and Seduce me at Sunrise and loved them. Although I wanted it to be on Leo, I’m happy with Poppy too.

Aaaaannnnnndddd I think its high time I start working on my blogroll

  1. You beat me on the BTT link again 🙂 I like sci-fi and fantasy. I read Anne McCaffrey’s Freedom’s Landing a while back, and love the story (hated the writing style, though… will be interesting to see if I like Dragonriders of Pern)

I have Uglies, Pretties, Specials and Extras on Mt. TBR, but I’ve not gotten around to them yet. Devourer of Books, I think, suggested I take time out to read them straight through. I’ve got too many review books to get through at the moment for such an endeavor, though.

    1. hehe…yes. I start refreshing BTT site 10 mins before it goes up, not kidding 🙂

Actually it’s half an hour before my lunch time and I like to finish BTT before that bcoz if I keep it for after lunch, chances are I might not do it at all. Good luck next time 🙂

I have Pretties and I read around 20 pages of it. But honestly I am not a fan of S.W’s writing style, it’s just that his stories are really good. But they are quick reads.

  2. I love fantasy, but I do sometimes struggle with sci-fi. I’m trying to broaden my horizons though. =)

I’m also excited that Tempt Me at Twilight is out this year! I’m really looking forward to it.

  3. I can NEVER get into any of the Christopher Pike books while growing up. I don’t read much Sci-Fi maybe it’s due to the technical terms

  4. I loved Christopher Pike when I was twelve–his heyday. I still enjoy them; I think he wrote some very distinctive, challenging books for young adults. His longer fiction (like Season of Passage) did not appeal to me as much, however.

Recommending a genre work for someone can be tricky, but for fantasy, I would check out Ellen Datlow & Terry Windling’s Fairy Tale books (both novels and short story collections). As for sci-fi … well, you have hard and soft. CJ Cherryh or Anne McCaffrey are both good starts, or Heinlein’s The Past Through Tomorrow. Harry Harrison’s Stainless Steel Rat books are fun and fast.

  5. I read some, not alot. Mainly because my favorite genres are romance and suspense, but if something catches my eye in Fantasy or Sci-Fi, I’ll read it.

  6. I used to love Christopher Pike as a teenager, but I don’t like much (any?) science fiction now. I was recommended Enders Game, and didn’t realise it was Sci-fi until it arrived on my doorstep via bookmooch. Perhaps I’ll give that a go for Sci-fi day.

  7. I totally loved Christopher Pike when I was younger!! The 23rd is a Tuesday. Which means probably little reading and a whole lot of working. Yuck. 😦

  8. Hmmm… not a huge Fantasy/Sci Fi fan with the exception of some perenial favourites (Tolkein and Narnia). However, I did discover the first book of the CS Lewis Sci-fi trilogy last year and I have to say that I enjoyed it immensely. In fact this post reminds me that I should read the other two in the series!
