Booking through thursday: Worse?

Which is worse? Finding a book you love and then hating everything else you try by that author, or Reading a completely disappointing book by an author that you love?

This is such a difficult question.

Finding a book you love and then hating everything else you try by that author?
I will have to put Patricia Cornwell in this category. I remember loving the first book I read written by her. But then I don’t know what happened. None of her other books could hold my interest, even the bestsellers. I was disappointed yes, I thought I had a new favorite author.

Reading a completely disappointing book by an author that you love?
This happens so many times. I remember when I was in college I loved Sidney Sheldon. I have read every single book by him. That does not mean I have loved all though. But I was never thoroughly disappointed by any of them until I read his last book, ‘The other side of me’, his autobiography. I didn’t expect anything dramatic like his novels obviously, but I was disappointed because it was an account of his life, it was all statistics without any real emotions in it.

So what is worse? I guess the first one. Because even if I don’t like a book by my favorite author I am sure there are other books that I might like. In the first case, if I don’t like any other books by a new author, it’s disappointment.

But in the end, both are disappointing to varying degrees.

  1. I used to love Sidney Sheldon and read all his books.(back in the 80’s) I don’t know what happened and why I stopped reading him. I find it easier to forgive an author I love rather than one I’ve hardly read. Great topic.

  2. I agree with you, that the first one is probably worse. At least if you really like the author then you will probably find some of their books that you enjoy! Happy BTT!

  3. I think I’ve only read one or two books by Sidney Sheldon but I’ve an ex-classmate who’s crazy about his books.

For me, I tend to be more disappointed if the book I don’t enjoy comes from my favourite author, but then again that does not mean I’ll stop reading his/her future books either. 😉

  4. hmmm.. I never heard of Patricia Cornwall, and I’ve heard of Sheldon, but never read anything by him. For me, the second of the two is worse.

  5. I feel the same way…I figure even my favorite author is allowed a bad one every now and then, but finding a new author that I think I’m going to love – only to find out I don’t, is more disappointing for me. This is one of those questions I could really have answered either way.

  6. I really liked Patricia Cornwell but I did read them quite a while ago.

I have to say that I think it’s worse when a favorite author puts out a book that I don’t like. My full answer is here.
